Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) recognise that all members of our society have not had the same opportunities to benefit from higher education. Students with disabilities, mature learners and students from certain cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, continue to experience a variety of barriers to reaching their full educational potential.
The number of students with disabilities in higher education has increased significantly in recent years. This increase is a reflection of a variety of factors including enhanced supports across the education sectors, the development of positive admission policies for students with disabilities and the development of dedicated disability support services in third level. The primary focus of the Disability/Access Office of any Higher Education Institution is in providing equality of opportunity and supporting all students to reach their full educational potential.
Today, Disability/Access Offices are as strongly committed as ever to significantly increasing the participation rates of all under-represented groups and to the creation of a socially inclusive learning environment for all.
