Screening Criteria - Blind/ Vision Impaired

(Including, but not exclusive - Aniridia, Best’s disease, Charles Bonnet syndrome, Coat’s disease, Coloboma Congenital cataracts, Corneal dystrophies (including Keratoconus), Corneal transplantation, Diabetes related eye conditions, Hemianopsia, Glaucoma, High degree myopia, Macular Hole, Nystagmus, Retinitis pigmentosa, Retinal vessel occlusion, Retinopathy of prematurity, Stargardt’s macular dystrophy, Stickler Syndrome, Thyroid eye disease, Uveitis, Lawrence Moon Biedel Syndrome, Alstrom Syndrome)

Accepted Medical Consultant/Specialist Ophthalmologist OR Ophthalmic Surgeon
Evidence of Disability

Complete the Evidence of Disability Form 2012.

OR

Submit an existing report completed by the appropriate professional which contains the same detail as the Evidence of Disability Form.

Your academic reference can be completed by your school or the Department of Education and Science Visiting Teacher Service can submit a Transition Report.

Age of Report While there is no age limit on diagnostic evidence submitted it is advisable to submit a recent report.
Other Disabilities/Medical Conditions Submit an Evidence of Disability Form for each disability / medical condition to be considered.
Personal Statement and Academic Reference

Your personal statement should outline the impact of disability on your academic and educational experience to date.

Your Academic Reference provides background information on your educational experience including the impact your disability has had on your education. It also describes the supports and adaptations you will need in third level.

Your Academic Reference can be completed by your school OR by the Department of Education and Science Visiting Teacher service can submit a Transition Report on DARE applicant.
DARE Eligibility

We will consider your application for DARE once the appropriate professional confirms that :

  • The Best Corrected Visual Acuity is equal to or less than 6/24 (Snellen) in better eye

OR

  • Near Vision N18 or less in better eye.

OR

  • The Peripheral Field of Vision is limited to the extent that it interferes with normal visual acquisition of visual material e.g. Homonymous Hemianopia.

OR

  • The Central Field of Vision is limited to the extent that it interferes with normal visual acquisition of visual material e.g. Stargardt’s Disease

    OR

    Cortical visual impairment as part of a brain insult resulting in an inability to process visual information
